Colorado Walleye Fishing Locations

Short article about walleye fishing locations in Colorado including Chatfield and Cherry Creek Reservoirs!

Colorado Walleye Fishing Locations

Author: Daniel Eggertsen

There are many locations in Colorado to do some walleye fishing. Cherry Creek Reservoir is known for some trophy-sized walleye. The best fishing is between May and June with a jig and bait. You can fish other months, but you will need a map to see where the walleye schools hide.

The best locations are near the island and the dam. The Boulder Reservoir is also good for spring walleye fishing. There are many areas where the underwater structures hold the walleye, but the holding seems to be good only during the spring months. These two places are located in northern parts of Colorado. The best times of the day are at sundown and into the night. The walleye are biting at minnows.

The Colorado River is another prime location for walleye fishing. The underwater rock structures and deadwood make nice hiding spots for the walleye. The best fishing is in the northwest section of the river. If you are looking for walleye fishing during February, look towards the inflows of San Juan and Colorado Rivers. The most effective way to fish these areas is a slow troll. Get a map so you know where the underwater structures are located.

Barr Lake is another place in Colorado to catch walleye. You will need a boat to get out on the lake to find the walleye. A map of the lake will show you where the underwater structures are located. The weed beds will also have walleye lurking. The best time to fish this lake is during the morning hours or at night right as the sun goes down. Use a minnow and a jig to catch the walleye. Shore fishing or shallow water fishing is not recommended for walleye fishing if you want to catch the fish.

Jackson Lake is another place to try your hand at walleye fishing any time of the year. The lake is located in the northeastern part of Colorado and has some great walleye fishing opportunities. The days are cool so the fishing is always right. You can fish for the walleye by the underwater structures and close to the shores at dusk and dawn. The best bait to use is a jig and a night crawler, although minnows work just as well. Not only is good fishing, it is a good place to camp when the weather is right.

Chatfield Reservoir is a popular place to catch walleye. Fish when the light is low and you will catch some nice sized walleyes. Although, walleye fishing is popular, most of the walleye catch are small but make enough for a tasty meal.

You do have to fish before the sun comes up or at night just after the sun goes down. The big walleye seem to be scared away because of the amount of traffic on the lake, but you can still catch some nice walleye with a bottom bouncer and a worm harness with two hooks. You can also use a Curly Tail Grub with a night crawler to fish for walleye on this lake.

Family Camping Vacations Near Denver

By Rich Herman

Colorado has over 8 million acres of public land and some of the most beautiful scenery that this great country has to offer. Whether you are visiting a national park, national monument, wilderness area, national forest or one of the 41 state parks, Colorado has much to offer. Family camping vacations offer some of the most memorable experiences for both parents and children, and will fit most any family's budget. Here are some great places to camp near Denver.

Chatfield State Park

Located 23 miles southwest of Denver, Chatfield State Park is nestled next to the foothills. It has 197 campsites all with electrical hookups and many with water and sewer hookups. All of the campsites are within walking distance to the lake. Camp, fish, boat, bike, hike or ride a horse while staying here. Facilities include flush toilets, showers and laundry facilities.
Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Located near Golden, Colorado and only 30 miles west of Denver, this park consists of over 12,000 acres of dense forest and stunning peaks. There are two campgrounds, stocked fishing ponds, and over 35 miles of hiking trails. Mountain bikes and horses are permitted on multiple-use trails. Both tent sites and sites with electrical hookups are available here.
Mueller State Park

This park is located near the town of Divide and is approximately 100 miles southwest of Denver. Pets are welcome at Mueller State Park, which offers some of the finest wildlife viewing opportunities around. Campers can choose from 132 campsites and the campground can accommodate motor homes, tents and trailers. All sites have electrical hookups and there are modern restrooms nearby, with coin operated showers and coin laundry service. The park consists of around 5,000 acres with over 50 miles of hiking trails and some of the most beautiful scenery that Colorado has to offer.
Rocky Mountain National Park

Located about 2 hours northwest of Denver in Estes Park, this park covers an enormous area. Elevations range from 8,000 to 14,259 feet and offer breathtaking scenery. There are five drive-in campgrounds with a total of 573 campsites, along with an additional 200 backcountry campsites for backpackers. The 359 miles of trails throughout the park provide incredible opportunities for hikers and horseback riders. When considering a camping vacation to Colorado, Rocky Mountain National Park is a "must see" location.
Obviously, with all the public lands that Colorado has to offer, this list covers only a few. However, if you are looking for some great camping opportunities near Denver it is hard to go wrong with any of these choices. Some of my fondest memories growing up were camping with my family, and there are some great times just waiting for you and your family. Start planning your trip today - have fun and stay safe!

Ice Fishing for Smallmouths on Chatfield Reservoir

This may seem a tad early since fall just arrived but here is something we know is not too far off in the distance ... ice fishing ...

In this short video, a father and son are out on the Chatfield ice fishing for ... well from their reactions in sounds like whatever takes the bait! As a matter of fact they even seem to struggle with the type of fish they're catching!

Just for the record, they are definitely smallmouth bass (and not ... "that weird fish") ...

Give a watch:

Chatfield Reservoir Trout and Walleye | MyOutdoorTV.com

Chatfield Reservoir near Littleton, Colorado is a great fishery for smallmouth bass, walleye, trout as well as perch, channel catfish and crappies. It's close proximity to the Metro-Denver area makes it one of the Front Range's most popular bodies of water for fishing and other water sports.

One advantage the late fall (November) offers ... less competition from pleasure boaters :)

The following link takes you to an episode of Lip'em & Rip'em TV filmed at Chatfield Reservoir with Lefty and guest fishing jigging spoons and drop-shot rigs for smallmouths off structure in 20-25 feet of water. So take a few moments and give a watch for some great action and fish catching tips by clicking on the link that follows ...
